More for keyboardists, or composers, it doesn’t offer many features for music production. With not so many features, it does the job, and in a small package. “It does the job” should be the slogan of this controller. But, don’t let the price fool yourself, it does the job pretty well. It ranges from $30-$40, which is damn cheap for a controller. Maybe the most impressive thing about the Midiplus AKM320 is the price.

I haven’t had any problem but I read some bad reviews about it.Īlso, it has a great software included, but it might be a hassle to use it if you are a beginner, for the lack of tutorials on it. Talking about the keyboard, it’s probably where it falls a little, keys are really small and the plastic doesn’t feel the best. One of its best features is the MPC pads, great for finger drumming, or as an extension of the keyboard. I have one myself and I backpacked with it for three months in Southeast Asia and it survived with no issues at all. Its design is beautiful and made of good quality plastic. One reason for its fame is its price combined with its brand because you know you are taking an Akai home.

The Akai Professional MPK Mini MKII is, definitely, the most popular controller in this list.

There's not a HUGE market for iPad, unfortunately - most controllers are PC controllers that happen to be class compliant and work with iPad too, and the iPad focused ones usually have very bad keybeds. If you are here is probably because you are in a budget and/or is looking for a MIDI keyboard controller that fits in your backpack. It's very personal - I'd suggest you to try one before buying. Also, some apps react better to it (I manage to get a very good velocity control on EPianos with Neo Soul Keys, but never found a good velocity curve for KORG apps). It might be a good solution for you.ĬME XKey's velocity is *weird* to play and it took me a lot to adapt to it. I'm personally really tempted by the new Novation Launchkey MKIII with 37 keys, I had the MKI 49 and it was pretty good for iPad playing (also, powered by the iPad through the USB bus, so no onboard power needed - consider this as a solution too, most controllers have a very limited current draw if they are iPad-powered).

IK Multimedia's keybeds are atrocious (for me, at least - classically trained pianist, tho). If you want to get closer to a real piano, I would look for decent full-sized keys - not much in the 37-keys, unfortunately. Still decent for the other apps, but I'm not a huge fan of KORG's microkey (still better than AKAI's tho). KORG Gadget and Module interface (as expectable) very well with the Microkey, and the velocity/playability for those app is pretty good. Not outdated, nothing close to it on the market yet.įor instrumental/classical instrument I find the iPad pretty lacking in general, not too many sound canvas (probably the expansions of KORG Module are the best you can get in a single app, or you can match&mix on Audiobus). The Reface CP's sounds are GORGEOUS if you're looking for EPiano-Clavinets (and there's a decent onboard hidden acoustic piano sound too), has batteries and minikeys, but requires a cable for connection. I personally have a Reface CP, XKey Air, KORG MicroKey Air 25 and I've tested/tried several more.
